About various standards and regulations

Is ABS plastic FDA-approved?

ABS resin is listed as one of substances approved under FDA regulations. Moreover, despite restrictions on compounding ingredients, the elution level of monomer components and usage, it can also be deployed in equipment usable repeatedly.

Which regulations apply plastic materials usable in printers with the Blue Angel mark in Germany?

To obtain the Blue Angel mark, printer housings must be made of non-halogen flame-retardant materials. The use of antimony trioxide is also limited. We offer non-halogen type grades to sensure compliance with these requirements.

What is NSF?

NSF stands for “National Sanitation Foundation” and denotes a voluntary third-party certification organization in the United States, which sets outt, tests and certifies sanitary standards for plumbing areas.

Does ABS resin contain ozone - depleting substances?

Our manufacturing process uses zero , specified CFCs, which deplete ozone, as raw materials.

What is FMVSS302?

The FMVSS acronym stands for “Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.” The compliance of our automotive grades has been confirmed. FMVSS302 is one of the US test standards implemented for vehicle materials and a standard for testing combustion performance (burn rate).

About UL standards

Please specify the UL file number.

The UL file number of the former UMG ABS Co., Ltd. product is E47016 and the UL file number of the former Techno Polymer Co., Ltd. product is E54297.

Please give more details of flame retardancy.

Please refer to the following link for the flammability class specified by UL94 :

Please explain the UL94 test method.

I would like to receive a document proving UL certification.

Two types of certification formats exist for documents certifying UL certification.

Can a grade that is UL - certified for 1.6mm be used in a product that is 1.0mm thick?

Since this exceeds the certification scope, it will no longer be treated as a certified product. A thinner wall - certified grade may be used or product testing may be required.

What is the RTI of ABS resin?

The RTI (Relative Thermal Index) is a temperature index of heat - aging resistance by UL and RTI is the temperature at which more than half the original electrical and mechanical properties can be retained during extended exposure. The RTI varies depending on the type and grade of resin. Under UL’s individual product standards, the required RTI level differs depending on the product type and the part in which it is used. Standard ABS resin has an RTI of 60ºC.

About Resin Molding Processing

Please provide information about molding conditions.

Conditions vary depending on the product type. The drying conditions are listed in the molding condition table, which can be downloaded from the injection molding conditions on the “Products” page of this site.

What dimensions are required for the air vent?

For general ABS resin, a depth is of 2/100 to 3/100, the land length of 3 to 5 mm and width of 5 to 20 mm. The standard gas vent groove depth is 0.5 to 1.0 mm.

The gate mark does not stop.

This is more likely when the temperature of the mold, or resin is low, or the injection speed is high. It is also determined by the mold design. Please refer to troubleshooting for details.

What causes silver streaks?

Silver streaks can appear on the surface of injection-molded products for various reasons.

Please explain paintability.

ABS resin is the easiest resin on which to paint among general-purpose and engineering plastics. Paintability largely depends on the material composition, the surface condition of the molded product and the selection of the paint itself.

About Coloring

Please explain the relationship between color codes and colors in more detail.

There are three types cases of color codes. Please refer to the following link.

I would like to know about the color development procedure.

Typically, customers are requested to provide a color sample and the chosen grade is blended with a coloring agent (dye/pigment) for tinting. During this phase, the coloring material is selected while taking into account various regulations, requisite product characteristics and the molding method. Originally, the hue of the colored product should align with the color sample across all light sources (lighting conditions). However, due to the aforementioned selection of coloring materials, achieving this may pose challenges. Consequently, specifying the light source for the usage environment or color evaluation from the outset is recommended.

Do you have a masterbatch for coloring?

Our company sells colored products, but we do not produce or sell master batches for coloring.

Do colors look different depending on the light source?

The coloring of a single object will appear to differ in if illuminated by different light sources in a phenomenon known as color rendering. Metamerism is a phenomenon whereby two colors with different spectral distributions appear the same under specific lighting conditions. Colors with the same spectral characteristics look the same, regardless of lighting conditions. However, if the spectral characteristics of one side (for example, one of the color samples and the color plate) are differ, they will also look different under certain lighting conditions. Even if they look the same, they will look different under other lighting conditions.

Is metallic coloring possible?

Our special coloring range includes scope to , develop metallic colors and sell such materials. However, the specific properties of of metallic materials may make it, difficult to produce the requested color in certain cases. This is due to issues like variance in the metallic feeling and conspicuous weld lines.

About Usage and Design

What when designing resin products?

The key is to clarify the requirements and quality for resin-molded products and select a compliant resin grade accordingly. Aspects to take into consideration include product thickness (for rigidity), corner R (resin fluidity consideration, corner stress concentration relaxation), shape, position and number of ribs and bosses, gate design, punching gradient, and degassing.

Please specify the Poisson'’s ratio of ABS resin.

For general ABS resin, ν=0.35 to 0.38.

About CAE

I would like to receive a resin file.

When simulating resin flow in a mold, data representing the flow characteristics of the resin grade used for molding is required. We provide the above data for your use. Please send a request to our sales department using the email form, specifying the grade you are considering and the all other information required.

What is Poisson’s ratio?

What is longitudinal elastic modulus?

What is transverse elastic modulus?

About Resin Properties

I would like to know about chemical resistance.

Outcomes fluctuate based on the type of chemical utilized. Dissolved chemicals are not applicable. For ABS resin chemical immersion test results, please click “See details” below. Moreover, interacting with chemicals in a strained environment may induce cracking (environmental stress cracking). For thorough explanations and mitigations pertaining to environmental stress cracking, please refer to the “Troubleshooting” page. Various grades, enhanced for resistance to environmental stress cracking, are available for purchase.

Please explain water absorption.

Since ABS resin absorbs water, it must be allowed to dry when molding. The water absorption level of general-purpose grades is about 0.5 to 0.7% when left in the atmosphere at room temperature and 1% for some heat-resistant and special grades. Please download and refer to the information on injection molding conditions for each product on the Product Introduction page. For injection molding, dry with a water absorption rate of 0.05% or less.

Please the oxygen index.

The oxygen index for flame-retardant type ABS resin is approximately 22 to 35, depending on the flame-retardant performance and approximately 18 for flame-retardant type ABS resin.

Please explain the electrical resistance and dielectric breakdown strength.

Standard ABS resin has a volume resistivity of 10E+15 to 10E+18ohm・cm and a dielectric breakdown strength of 14-20kv/mm.

At what temperature will ABS resin ignite?

The ignition temperature of ABS resin is approximately 500℃, but this figure fluctuates depending on the combustion environment conditions.

What are the values of relative permittivity and dielectric loss tangent?

Standard ABS resin has a dielectric constant of 2.4-5.0 (60Hz) and a dissipation factor of 0.004-0.008 (10E+6Hz).

Please explain more about the glass transition temperature of ABS resin.

ABS resin exhibits glass transition temperatures in two temperature regions, approximately 200℃ apart. A transition point at roughly -80 to -90ºC on the low temperature side is precipitated by butadiene rubber and another transition point of around 120ºC on the high temperature side is prompted by PSAN. The low temperature side characteristic significantly contributes to the ABS resin’s low temperature impact strength, while the high temperature side dictates its heat resistance. An example of measuring dynamic shear elastic properties can be referenced for further understanding. The glass transition temperature can be ascertained by identifying the peak temperature of tanδ. Measurement example of dynamic shear bullet properties

Can any materials be used to compare the characteristics of ABS resin with other resins?

Given the unique sample preparation and test conditions for each resin, comparing and evaluating different resins with a single test method is impossible. We recommend researching the differences in the products you plan to consider. Reference books on plastics that compare numerical values may be useful, e.g. “Plastic Reader : Performance Table of Main Thermoplastic Plastics”. Please also read the disclaimer before viewing.

What is the molding shrinkage rate for ABS?

It is 0.4 to 0.6% for ABS and 0.2 to 0.5% for AS as a general rule. Please refer to the following link.

Structures in which a PVC sheet comes into contact with ABS resin seem prone to decline (via stress cracking) in the ABS. Why? Moreover, oil adhering to the product is considered sub-optimal. Why?

About Resin Composition

Please explain the composition of ABS resin.

ABS resin is a ternary copolymer that polymerizes three types of monomers: : acrylonitrile, styrene and butadiene. Please refer to the following link.

What are the characteristics of ABS and AES resins?

Both resins are within the spectrum between general -purpose resins and engineering plastics. Their surface hardness, coloration and design accuracy explain why they are used in many products. Favorable moldability also makes such resin suitable for wide-ranging parts. Please refer to the following link.

What kind of resin is AXS resin?

The designation “ABS resin” derives from the initials of the monomers composing the resin. Various rubbers are employed as substitutes for butadiene rubber to enhance weather resistance, including AES, ASA, SAS and ACS resins for example. Our company proactively utilizes diverse rubber types, excluding chlorinated rubber, to leverage their attributes. We refer to them collectively as AXS resins and label them as high-performance styrenic resins, inclusive of weather-resistant grades.

About the Test Method

How do ASTM and ISO test methods differ?

Please explain the ISO test method.

We introduce the test methods below, illustrating test items which are most often queried. Please click below for more details.

Please explain the glow wire test.

A red-hot wire called a glow wire is heated to a specified temperature on the flat part of the sample, then pressed against the test surface for a certain period of time. There are five types of red-hot wire test temperatures, starting at 550ºC in increments of 100ºC and peaking at 960ºC.

About the Environment and Recycling

I would like to recycle ABS resin.

Products molded under appropriate management conditions can be recycled as materials without significant deterioration in their physical properties provided this is done after normal use over an extended period. Thermal recycling is also possible when material recycling becomes difficult due to an inability to separate it from other resins or materials.

Is ABS resin subject to PRTR?

Do you use specific brominated flame- retardants?

Specific brominated flame - retardants include PBBs (polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), which encompass several varieties depending on the number of bromines involved. Although our products previously included such items in, flame-retardant grades, we have already discontinued usage of these grades.

Do you use antimony compounds?

Antimony compounds are used as flame-retardant aids, except for some flame-retardant grades. You can check the grades used by ISO11469 display or MSDS.

Do your products contain ozone -depleting substances?

Our manufacturing process uses zero , specified CFCs, which deplete ozone, as raw materials.

I would like to request an investigation of any environmentally hazardous substances in your products.

The majority of products are colored utilizing ABS resin, due to its excellent coloring properties. This means that any examination of environmentally hazardous substances must include investigation and analysis of the coloring agent. Numerous customer-specified colors for product coloring exist and even when a survey request is made for red or black, pinpointing the precise coloring agent may be challenging. To facilitate and expedite the process, understanding particulars like the grade name and color code is imperative. Please directly consult the sales personnel responsible for the customer and note that a fee is generally levied for submitting data that includes measurements.

Are brominated flame - retardants brominated flame - retardants?
If are other flame-retardant materials being considered due to the dioxin issue?
What measures do you think will be taken in future for flame-retardant technology based on non-halogenated resins?
